First six weeks as a family of four

Well. Here's some tidbits of the past six weeks:

  • Atticus is a total cuddle bug, surprise surprise. Mama's a fan. :)

  • Newborns without tummy troubles are glorious. My goodness. What a relief. I told a friend in a text last night, I think my heart would break if another one of my babies was in pain constantly and I couldn't do a thing to help them. I'm so grateful he's so easy (I mean relatively--he's still human) to soothe. It gives me a false sense of competence. (I'll have to write a post devoted to mama's of colicky newborns one of these days because looking back, that was nuts. They're my heroes.)

  • He HATES garlic. Found this out the hard way when he was two weeks old, when we went out to eat and I had something with garlic sauce on it. Now I just avoid it, unless its a little bit of powder which he can handle.

  • Jori is a total sweetheart. I knew this before, but I wasn't sure how she was going to react to being a big sister. But she has been an absolute champ! She's so sweet and gentle with the baby, and never violent at all with him. She does have a hard time sharing mom and dad sometimes, mainly when she's just woken up, but she still never takes it out on him. I'm so proud of her for handling the change so well.

  • I loved that the first week Atticus was home, frequently when the four of us were together Jori would say "We are a family!" It's like she knew it had changed and it was her way of voicing her acceptance of the change.
  • Jori also continues to learn and mature. I try really hard to say I'm sorry to her when I've lost my temper or done something else wrong, because I think the best way to teach is by example. So the other day we were having a tiff, and I lost my temper and so apologized. Then a minute later she came up to me, gently put her hand on my thigh and said "I'm so sorry, to you." I felt so proud of my little angel. She is so perfect. Just perfectly herself.

Jori loves the rain! There was this ridiculously intense bout of rain when Atticus was a week old, and Jori was outside when it hit, but rather than run inside she was just giggling like mad! We were at my parents at the time, and my dad was nice enough to take her out for about a minute more wrapped up in a blanket with the umbrella up. She was so happy. :)

  • Atticus loves baths. It's awesome. :) He might squawk when first put in the water, but after about 2 seconds he's like "ooohhh...that's nice." This was his first bath in these pics, which was his hardest. But it wasn't hard! Man. It's awesome.

  • Jori continues to prove herself a marvelous parrot. Some sayings of mamas she has picked up are "Oh my goodness!" or "Oh my goodness gracious!" Also "Holy cow!," "That's wonderful!," and "Thank Goodness!" She also says "Actually" and "Probably" a fair amount, sometimes not where they belong. And she's been saying "Just one" or "Just this once," also out of context more frequently than not.

  • Atticus is a night owl. But by now, at six weeks that only means he likes to stay up late, as in 11. Not late as in 3, thank heavens. We really only had a couple really bad nights, one in particular when he was about...3 weeks old, maybe? Where he was awake from about 12 to 5 with a titch of sleep in there. Thank goodness that's not the norm! So our current norm is Jori is in bed by 8, I go to bed anywhere between then and 10, and Sam is in charge of the babe (except feedings) until midnight, at which point I take over. Atticus will sleep-then-wake-up-when-placed-in-crib from...I don't know, 9:30 on? Until about 11, eating sometime between 8 and 9:30, and then he wakes up to eat again usually at like 2:30ish, then 5 again. Then he's back to needing to be held/helped with sleeping until about 8, when we currently start our day...but I'll take it! He's not usually full fledged awake so even getting to half-sleep while holding him is better than having to start our day at 5.

  • I stink at getting him on a schedule. Not that I've tried really, I just mean...he just sleeps on and off all day and night, and I basically just go with the flow. I should really be better about putting him in his crib whenever he falls asleep...meh.
We got to go up to Idaho briefly, because our car needed a repair. Jori loved the horses. She was chomping on a cookie through most of one ride, which was hilarious to watch. Well, to me. And I'm her mom. So who knows.

  • Atticus started social smiles at the beginning of last week (4 days before he hit 6 weeks), too! They were exclusively for daddy until Saturday night, when mama finally got one. Hurray! He's also kind of started cooing, but only kind of.
  • Did I ever mention that Sam got offered a full-time position with benefits at Multiling? It came at just the right time, because we were trying to figure out how he was going to do school and work and have time for homework and family and observation physical therapy hours, all at once. It was rather stressful. But then he got offered a full time position, so because he hadn't really been passionate about physical therapy anyway he went with that and decided to not worry about school for the time being. He can always go back if need be. But it's awesome to just be able to hang out together in the evenings! Well...for like an hour, before I go to bed. But still!
  • I'd thought before that the love I felt for my daughter was a gift, and I continue to think that with two kids. It's such an incredible, hard to understand thing. It's so beyond me. But it strengthens my testimony of the very existence of God, because I know this is not me. This is some of His love, which I am privileged to have come through me. For my kids. It's just so permanent. It's a miraculous feeling.

Loving this life o' mine! More pics to come (probably), from Sam's phone. We're also looking for a new place to live again since with Sam's going full time, rent is so much here it's not really worth staying unless we really loved it, and it's an apartment. We'd rather rent a house if possible! Cross your fingers.

Guess What?

I started college at BYU-Idaho in January 2008 (because they assign 2 out of 3 possible semesters to students to be able to admit more of them, so I sat out Fall Semester). So.

AFTER:

  • 5 1/2 years of on and off, full-time/part-time classes
  • 1 Academic Probation
  • 1 Academic Suspension
  • 1 hardcore heartbreak (and a chunky get-mentally-healthy-again stretch)
  • 9 Jobs (Never been fired! That's what happens when you take two part-time jobs every time you move back and forth between Rexburg and Provo, rather than one full time.)
  • 7 Sets of roommates, only living with one of them more than once. Shout out to Rachael Martin!
  • 9 Moves, while single (including moving next door, moving out after 5 days and moving in te middle-of-the-night)
AFTER:
  • 1 AWESOME first-semester-back GPA, after suspension
  • 1 Lovely fall-in-love story
  • 1  Engagement
  • 1 Wedding
  • 2 Universities
  • 1 Associate's Degree
  • 1 and 8/9 completed pregnancies, including morning sickness during finals and full-time student status during 3rd trimester twice
  • 1 Beautiful, healthy daughter's birth (yay!)
  • 5 Months of colicky crying in poor daughter, while-mama-was-doing-evening-classes-while-daddy-also-went-to-school-and-worked-part-time. Blegh.
  • 1 Utah State Hospital volunteer experience, playing with six 10-year-olds with some mental struggles during P.E. Fun!
  • 1 Summer Internship, while husband completed his at the same time
  • 8 moves while married (including four different homes in four months, in three states)
AFTER:
  • 1/3 college credits completed as a mama
  • 1 newborn-grown-to-two-year-old
  • 6 months living out of mainly suitcases with a one-year-old
  • 2 times our bank account dropping to the single digits
  • 3 1/2 years of marriage
  • 1 4.0 GPA
  • 1 winter-spent-in-a-beach house (random)
  • Countless late-nights for homework, or awakenings with baby
  • MULTIPLE, multiple blessings
After ALL of it:

I'm graduating from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. I finished my last class on Friday and will be walking in graduation, 37 weeks pregnant August 15 & 16.

BOOO YAAAHHH!!!

Videos and brief update

Obviously I haven't been blogging much lately. I'll give you a quick update, hopefully in chronological order:

Our last laptop died. Sadness. Especially because I hadn't saved all of the pictures and videos to another source yet. Fortunately, I did save some of the latest vids like the day before it really bit the bullet, so that's good. And I'm hoping my bro Mike can access what was on the hard drive and we can retrieve anything else that I didn't save to an external source.

On the bright side, I found and secured an internship for Summer Term. Yay! I'll be interning with the Division of Child and Family Services, basically just shadowing for the extent of it. It surprised me, honestly: I thought I'd be...more hands on, maybe? Actually contributing to whatever organization I interned with. But they said since I'll be there for such a short amount of time and am an undergraduate student, they can't really give me many duties so my time would best be used just observing as many different things as I can. But really I think that'll be interesting, and informative. Basically I'll get an idea of what Social Workers do.

The only downside to me finding an internship is how crazy busy we're going to be. Sam has to complete 150 hours for his internship, and mine will require 135 hours. So basically that's around 20 hours per week each. Plus I'm scheduled for a world religions class, which is equivalent  to half-time student work again. Why does any of this matter? Jori pori. We'll finally really have to rely on others to care for her for quite a bit of those 8 weeks. It's discouraging, but I'm trying not to be prideful and accept help gratefully. Just easier said than done.

I'm real excited for Spring Term to get done, even though Summer Term is going to be even crazier. I just really don't like group work! Not that there's anything wrong with the people, really. I'm just evil.

Though our laptop died, a couple days later my friend Laura was EXTREMELY generous, and offered to give us the laptop she used throughout college because she wasn't really using it anymore. So after my bro Mike fixed it up (thanks again), it's running great and we have a computer at home again. Yay!

That's about all to report. I have a few more cute pics and vids from our camera, but it's in the trunk of my parent's car so they'll have to wait. Still, here's some videos that I haven't yet loaded:

Fun in Wyoming...and then a deer jumped in front of our car

On Wednesday, the 18th of April, Sam, Jori and I set off for Wyoming, to visit Sam's oldest sister and her family (of nine!). We decided to wait to begin our journey at Jori's bedtime, because long car rides are such a struggle for her. Unfortunately, it's a roughly eight hour journey, and neither Sam nor I were able to sleep while the other one was driving. But we got there safely at about 3:15 in the morning Thursday and all was well.

We had a really great time while there! We spent time outside in their backyard, pushing Jori on the swings and jumping on the trampoline; we had fun in their hot tub; we got to see two of our oldest nieces and nephews, Phillip and Elena, perform in a dress rehearsal for their high school production of Into the Woods; we went out to eat; we rode their four wheelers; we watched movies in their theater room; we spent time with the family; and we even got our dental work done for free! (Jim, Heidi's husband, is a dentist. We were really grateful he could take care of our teeth for us while there-it was very generous of him.)

Perhaps my favorite aspect of our vacation, though, was how our Jori acted. She was fantastic! She's become much more independent over the past...by now it's been about 3 weeks, I think because she finally figured out how to use her knees while crawling. So she has been (and was up there) so pleasant to be with! It certainly didn't hurt that they have a fairly large house, so she had lots of areas to explore, and had lots of people paying attention to her. Whatever the reason she was so happy, I'm grateful! All mommies I'm sure could agree with me: the best vacation is good behavior of kids. ? Well that's what I think anyway.

 Hot tubbin' it up
 Dentist face!!!

 Cute Breidi

This is Jori's newest favorite trick: she smiles with realll squinty eyes
Tommy is two years older than Jori, which to me felt like good practice almost. :)
Ari is so sweet and thoughtful: she made me something almost every day I was there.
Jori and Penny (the bird) did not really hit it off

We (regretfully) came back to reality on Monday the 30th, daring to leave earlier and deal with an un-happy Jori in the hopes of getting a better night's sleep that night.

But this was actually a rather interesting happening too: we were going along at, all things considered, a very reasonable pace. Our projected arrival time was 11:00 pm, which I was very happy about. And then at about 10:00, a deer came out of nowhere and we hit it. Gah!!!!

It was one of the scariest moments in a car I've ever had. Sam was driving, so as soon as I saw it I grabbed the door handle and just squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for impact. (I wouldn't have done that if I was driving.)

But Heavenly Father was looking out for us: somehow, miraculously, Sam swerved enough that he didn't lose total control of the car (we WERE going 70 mph, can't swerve too much going that fast) but the only damage to the car was the driver's side mirror being knocked off. I still to this day can't believe how lucky we were. We started fish-tailing right after impact but Sam gained control again, and we were just fine.

Jori was all too happy to get to play at eleven o' clock at night

Anyway. Moral of the story: driving to or from Wyoming in the dark, be sure to pray for protection.
